In February ofthe Dialogue was published; in October of that same year, Galileo was ordered to come to Rome to answer before the Inquisition. Since these four bodies apparently circled Jupiter, this theory was put in question.
After it was written, however, the Pontiff criticized the Dialogue for two reasons: In writing this essay I intend to analyse the reasoning why the Catholic Church found such a verdict, I will look into whether the Church just had a fundamental disregard for all scientific research, maybe due to the problems of the lack of unity of the Catholic Church.
He invented a thermometer, though a defective one, but he did not, as is sometimes claimed for him, invent the microscope. This became known as the Law of Free fall, which he would latter utilize after fifty years in constructing an astronomical clock.
Galileo was interested in the Copernican theory of a Heliocentric system, however Galileo lived in a time when the Catholic Church was very powerful and controlled a large amount of Europe, Galileo fought for his beliefs for twenty years but was branded guilty of suspicion of heresy by the inquisition.
Several scholars have called into question the very existence of the document of in which Galileo was supposed to have promised never to teach or write about the Copernican system. After that he was appointed philosopher and mathematician to the Grand Duke of Tuscany.
He later takes a post at the University of Padua which he won instead of Giordano Bruno, who was later executed as a heritic for his belief in the Copernican SystemGalileo stayed in Padua for eighteen years.
In March of that year, all Copernican theories were banned, but Galileo ignored the warning and continued to talk about his beliefs.
The Pope closed the case but desisted from absorbing blame for convicting Galileo for his assertions that the earth rotates around the sun, when the popular belief during this period was that the earth was central and the sun rotated around it. Galileo later leaves Padua to work for the Duke of Tuscany; he is even at one point received by the Jesuit astronomers of Rome; however this can only last so long, four years later Galileo is ordered to cease his support of Heliocentricity by a Cardinal Bellarmine.
During the years immediately following, taking advantage of the celebrated leaning tower, he laid the foundation experimentally of the theory of falling bodies and demonstrated the falsity of the peripatetic maxim, which is that an objects rate of descent is proportional to its weight.
This type of dedication was common practice for scientists who needed funding but his position is furthered by the fact that he is naming heavenly bodies and not earthly things. In November ofGalileo found a position as a professor of mathematics at the university of Pisa, the same one he had left without a degree four years before.
Though, as has been said, it is by his astronomical discoveries that he is most widely remembered, it is not these that constitute his most substantial title to fame. But this had no effect on Galileo. The Roman Catholic Church was uneasy about this declaration that they were wrong. In statics, he gave the first direct and satisfactory demonstration of the laws of equilibrium and the principle of virtual velocities.
